Evora and its surrounding region has a rich history going back more than two millennia, as demonstrated by megalithic monuments near as Anta do Zambujeiro and the Cromeleque of Almendres. Some Neolithic settlements have developed in the region, the closest located in the Alto de São Bento. Another village of this type is the so-called Castle Giraldo, continuously inhabited since the third millennium to the first millennium BC and sporadic occupation in medieval times.
