The Tagus is the longest river of the Iberian Peninsula. Its watershed is the third longest in the peninsula, behind the river Douro and the Ebro river. Born in Spain – where it is known as Tajo – the 1593 m altitude in the Sierra de Albarracín, and flows into the Atlantic Ocean, bathing Lisbon, after a journey of about 1007 kilometers. Its watershed is 80,600 km² (55,750 km² in Spain and 24,850 km² in Portugal), being the second most important of the Iberian Peninsula after the Ebro river.
